EMDR Florence

EMDR in Florence

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapeutic approach used to process traumatic experiences and memories that continue to cause distress in the present. In my practice in Florence, I integrate it, when clinically indicated, within broader psychotherapy pathways.

When EMDR may be indicated

EMDR is used especially when a past experience continues to resurface in the present in the form of anxiety, intrusive images, physical reactions, or avoidance. Typically:

  • single traumatic events, such as accidents, assaults, sudden bereavements
  • difficult relational experiences prolonged over time
  • anxiety related to a specific event, including critical work situations
  • experiences of mobbing or critical events at work, often intertwined with burnout
  • emotional blocks that reappear despite rational awareness

Not all situations require EMDR, and it is not a path that begins from the first session: the indication is assessed together after the initial sessions.

How it works

The method works on the memory of the experience while a bilateral stimulation is activated, generally through guided eye movements. The goal is to allow the memory to be reprocessed and “relocated” in the past, reducing the emotional charge it carries. The person remains aware and in control throughout the session: this is not hypnosis, nor a technique that acts without the recipient's knowledge.

If you want to learn more about how the method works, I discuss it in more detail in the article EMDR: what it is and what it's for.

How it fits into a therapy path

In my work, EMDR is not an isolated intervention: it is combined with Gestalt psychotherapy, with cognitive-behavioral techniques and, where useful, with Autogenic Training. The path always begins with a few sessions to understand the situation, define the goals, and assess which combination of tools makes sense in the specific case.
