Eating Disorders

Terapia Disturbi Alimentari

The eating disorders (ED) are clinical conditions characterized by a persistent alteration of eating habits and an excessive preoccupation with weight and body shape. They mainly arise during adolescence and affect predominantly, but not exclusively, females.

They are not a problem about food

This is the most common misunderstanding. Food is the ground on which the difficulty expresses itself, not its cause. Behind an eating disorder there are almost always issues of control, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and the relationship with one's own body and with others' gaze. This is why dietary guidelines alone do not solve the problem.

Signs to watch out for

  • Constant preoccupation with weight, calories, body shape
  • Food restriction, skipping meals, progressive elimination of entire food categories
  • Episodes of uncontrolled eating, often experienced with shame
  • Compensatory behaviors: vomiting, laxatives, excessive physical activity
  • Rituals around food, avoidance of meals with others
  • Distorted perception of one's own body, which does not match objective data
  • Social withdrawal and growing irritability

Why teamwork is needed

Eating disorders have a medical component that cannot be ignored: metabolic, cardiac, and endocrine alterations. For this reason, appropriate care is multidisciplinary and involves, depending on the situation, the doctor, the nutritionist, the psychotherapist, and in some cases the psychiatrist.

In acute phases or when physical conditions are compromised, the correct reference points are specialized centers for eating disorders, not an isolated psychological path. In these cases, the first step is to talk to your primary care physician.

Psychotherapeutic work

When the situation allows, psychotherapy works on the meaning the symptom has taken on in the person's life: what it protects, what it communicates, what need it is holding hostage. It is a long process, which proceeds gradually and requires patience — both from the person going through it and from those close to them.

If you recognize these signs

In yourself or in someone you care about, the advice is not to wait and not to face it alone. You can contact me for an initial consultation: we will assess the situation together and, if a different or more structured path than what I can offer is needed, I will tell you clearly and help you find your way.

Eating disorders require specific and often multidisciplinary intervention: you can start with a first consultation with a psychologist in Florence.
