Psychologist for depression in Florence
Depression is not simple sadness, and it doesn't pass by "reacting". It is a condition characterized by persistent low mood and a progressive loss of interest in activities that once brought pleasure, with a concrete impact on sleep, energy, concentration, and relationships.
The most common signs
- sadness or emptiness that persists for weeks
- apathy and loss of interest, even in things that once were enjoyable
- mental and physical fatigue disproportionate to what one is doing
- sleep disturbances, either excessive or insufficient
- difficulty concentrating and slowed thinking
- disproportionate feelings of guilt or inadequacy
- progressive withdrawal from relationships
I discuss this in more detail in the article Depression: the signs not to ignore.
When to ask for help
There's no need to wait until you "feel bad enough". If these signs last for several weeks and interfere with work, studies, or relationships, talking to a professional is already a helpful step. A consultation doesn't commit you to anything and, first and foremost, helps clarify what is going on.
If thoughts of harming yourself or no longer wanting to exist appear, don't wait: contact your doctor, go to the emergency room, or call 112.
How psychotherapy works
The process does not aim to remove the symptom as if it were an isolated malfunction. It serves to understand what feeds it: which personal, relational, and contextual dynamics sustain the suffering, and which resources the person already has without being able to access them. In my work, I integrate Gestalt psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and, when appropriate,EMDR.
In some cases, psychotherapy is combined with a medical evaluation: when the situation requires it, consultation with the treating physician or a psychiatrist is part of the process, neither replacing nor excluding it.
