THE POWER OF EMPATHY\u00a0<\/b><\/span>
Empathy: a key to understanding human relationships; a necessary skill in all helping professions, where workers daily encounter the suffering of others and attempt to alleviate their pain. Without empathy, the distance from others is so enormous that it compromises not only the provision of assistance, but even the very recognition of others as human beings. The unfortunately frequent experiences of patients who feel treated like \"numbers\" rather than people are a clear demonstration of what happens when empathy is lacking. relation<\/a> help.
The interest psychological<\/a> The study of empathy has ancient roots, and the term \"empathy\" is currently used in many different fields, even distant from each other. psychological<\/a> Empathy was coined by Titchner in 1909, as a translation of the German term Einfuhlung (feeling inside), which had been used in the second half of the century by some authors in relation to aesthetic enjoyment. Since the beginning of the century, the term has been used to describe the particular experience individuals experience when they \"feel inside themselves\" the emotions of another person. Empathy, regardless of its definition, remains a construct. psychological<\/a> A complex interconnected system of emotional and cognitive levels. Empathy allows us to put ourselves in someone else's shoes through four essential qualities:
-the ability to see things from the other person's point of view, recognizing that this is their reality
- the suspension of judgment (not easy since we all have the tendency to judge the experience of others)
- the recognition of other people's emotions
- the ability to give back and communicate
To remind us of the importance of empathy in our daily relationships, and especially in the helping professions, I suggest you watch a short animated video produced by the RSA (Royal Society of the Arts) on the value and meaning of empathy, taken from a TED conference talk entitled \"The Power of Empathy\" by Bren\u00e9 Brown, a professor and researcher at the University of Houston who specializes in human relationships studies.<\/span>
