It's attributed to the master Linji Yixuan (9th century), founder of the Rinzai school, who used it to shake students too attached to the idea of an enlightenment to be received from outside: if along the path you meet an image of the Buddha — an authority, a teacher, a perfect model to imitate — and you cling to it as if it were the truth itself, that image becomes an obstacle. It must be "killed," that is, let go, because no external figure, however venerable, can take the place of one's own path.

In 1972 the American psychotherapist Sheldon Kopp chose this image as the title of his best-known book, If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him! The Pilgrimage of Psychotherapy Patients, applying it directly to clinical work: the patient often arrives in therapy looking for a teacher, a guide who knows what to do with their life in their place — and the task of therapy, paradoxically, is to disillusion them from this expectation, not to indulge it.

What This Means Applied to the Therapeutic Relationship

Almost everyone who starts a psychological journey carries, at the beginning, an implicit hope: that the therapist has a ready answer, a decisive technique, the right word that will take away the suffering. It's an understandable expectation — those who suffer seek relief — but it's also a trap, if it's never questioned. A therapist who indulged this expectation permanently, always offering the ready-made solution instead of helping the person find it themselves, would end up keeping the patient in a position of dependency rather than accompanying them toward autonomy — the same goal that makes the closing of a therapeutic process a physiological moment and not an abandonment.

"Killing the Buddha," in Kopp's language, means ceasing to look outside oneself for an authority that takes away responsibility for one's own life — whether it's a therapist, a guru, an idealized parent, or a partner perceived as a savior. It's not a rejection of guidance itself: it's the recognition that any guide, to be truly useful, must eventually make themselves no longer necessary.

Why "Killing" the Teacher Is an Act of Maturation, Not Violence

The metaphor is more frightening than it should be because the verb is strong, but the psychological process it describes is anything but destructive: it's the same movement that allows a child to become an adult without renouncing the affection for whoever raised them. Winnicott, speaking of the "good enough" parent, describes something very similar: good accompaniment — parental or therapeutic — prepares the person receiving it to no longer need it, not to depend on it forever.

“Killing the Buddha” within oneself means, then, ceasing to treat the guide’s idealized image as more real than one’s own direct experience. It doesn’t mean ceasing to have esteem or gratitude for those who helped us, but ceasing to expect that person to live our life in our place.

The opposite risk: idealizing the person guiding us too much

The reason this image remains so often quoted, more than fifty years later, is that it describes a very common psychological mechanism, not only a therapeutic one: the tendency to idealize a figure — a mentor, a leader, a partner, a therapist — attributing to them a wisdom or infallibility that no human being truly possesses. It's a dynamic close to what is described by the halo effect: a striking quality — confidence, charisma, authority — extends into an overall image of perfection, making it harder to recognize that person's real limits and, above all, one's own margins of autonomy.

In relationships even more than in therapy, this idealization can turn into a form of emotional dependency: the other person is perceived as indispensable to one's own stability, in an oscillation that often conceals precisely the difficulty of trusting one's own judgment when it isn't confirmed by an outside authority.

When It's Time to See a Psychotherapist

It makes sense to seek professional support when you notice you're systematically delegating your important decisions to an outside figure — a partner, a parent, a mentor, even a previous therapist — out of fear of getting it wrong on your own; when the end of a guiding relationship (a therapy, a mentorship, a significant bond) triggers a disproportionate sense of disorientation, as if you no longer knew how to function on your own; or when you recognize that you've built your identity around the approval of someone perceived as infallible.

How It's Addressed in Psychotherapy

In my work I use an integrated approach with a Gestalt, which helps bring attention back to one's own direct experience — what I actually feel, here and now, regardless of what I “should” feel according to an external model — together with cognitive-behavioral tools useful for recognizing the automatic thoughts that drive people to look outside themselves for a permission that no one can truly give.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “If you meet the Buddha, kill him” a Buddhist or a psychological phrase?
It originated in Zen Buddhism, attributed to the master Linji Yixuan (9th century), and was later taken up in 1972 by psychotherapist Sheldon Kopp as the title of his book on psychotherapy, which is where its current popularity comes from.

What does it mean to “kill” a guide or a teacher?
Not a literal act, nor a rejection of the person: it means ceasing to treat their idealized image as an authority to whom you delegate your own choices, and reclaiming responsibility for your own life.

Is it normal to idealize your therapist?
Yes, it's a common phenomenon in the early stages of a therapy path and it even serves a purpose: it helps you trust enough to open up. It becomes something to work on when it persists for a long time and gets in the way of your autonomy.

How can you stop depending on the judgment of an outside figure?
A good starting point is to begin noticing when you're seeking outside confirmation before you've even listened to yourself, and to ask what you'd think of a situation without knowing what the other person thinks about it.

I Also Work on This, in Florence

I am Dr. Martina Fino, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence registered with the Register of Psychologists of Tuscany. It's common, during a course of therapy, to go through a phase in which the therapist is experienced as an almost all-solving figure: this is a natural passage, and part of the work is precisely helping the person no longer need it. I see clients at my practice in Florence, in the Campo di Marte-Coverciano area, and I also offer online sessions for those who live outside the city or in other parts of Tuscany.

To schedule an initial consultation, even just by phone and with no obligation: 392 693 1473 (WhatsApp available) — fino.martina@gmail.com

In summary

The phrase originated in Zen Buddhism (Linji Yixuan, 9th century) and was made famous in 1972 by psychotherapist Sheldon Kopp's book.

Applied to therapy, it invites us not to treat the therapist (or any guide) as an authority that replaces responsibility for our own life.

“Killing” the idealized guide is a process of maturation, not an act of rejection or violence.

The opposite risk — prolonged idealization of an external figure — is close to the mechanisms of the halo effect and emotional dependency.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace a personalized psychological evaluation or consultation.

Sources

Kopp, S.
