Yet one of the most reassuring and, at the same time, most misunderstood ideas in psychoanalysis says exactly the opposite: a parent doesn't need to be perfect to raise a healthy child. They need to be, in the words of pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, "good enough."

Who Was Donald Winnicott

Donald Winnicott (1896-1971) was a British pediatrician and psychoanalyst who observed thousands of mother-child pairs over the course of his clinical career, first as a physician and later as a child psychoanalyst. This dual background — medical and psychoanalytic — led him to develop a theory of psychological development rooted in direct observation of real relationships between parents and children, rather than in clinical theory alone.

What Is the "Good Enough" Parent Theory

Winnicott coined the phrase "good enough parent" (originally good enough mother) to describe a parent who responds to the child's needs adequately most of the time, without managing to do so always and unconditionally — and who, precisely because of this, helps the child grow. The theory's central point is counterintuitive: it's not perfect, uninterrupted care that builds a secure child, but a very attentive initial adaptation followed by small, tolerable failures, which the child gradually learns to handle on their own.

A parent who is always and perfectly available would, according to Winnicott, paradoxically deprive the child of the chance to develop their own resources for tolerating frustration and for distinguishing themselves from the outside world.

What Is Holding: Winnicott's Concept of Containment

Another key concept in Winnicott's theory is holding, literally "holding in one's arms," but understood in a much broader sense than the physical gesture. Holding is the combination of physical and emotional care that offers the child an environment stable and predictable enough to feel safe, even when the parents aren't flawless. It doesn't require the absence of mistakes: it requires a sufficiently reliable base for the child to feel free to explore, experience frustration, and return to a point of safety.

True Self and False Self: What Happens When This Space Is Missing

Winnicott also described what happens when the surrounding environment isn't good enough, but instead demands that the child adapt excessively and prematurely to the needs of the person caring for them: in these cases, a false Self, a way of functioning built to please and meet other people's expectations, which covers and protects a true Self more authentic but perceived as unacceptable or unsafe to show. As adults, those who have developed a highly structured false Self often struggle to recognize their real needs, and may even experience their own successes as not entirely deserved or genuine — an experience very similar to what's described in the article on impostor syndrome.

Why "Good Enough" Is Better Than "Perfect"

The contemporary insistence on "perfect" parenting — also fueled by unrealistic models spread on social media — risks producing exactly the opposite effect to the one intended: chronically anxious parents pass that anxiety on to their children, and an obsessive focus on never making mistakes leaves less room for the real, relaxed presence that, according to Winnicott, is what truly matters. The same principle, applied to parental expectations about children's achievements, is described in the article on the Pygmalion effect: believing in a child doesn't mean expecting perfection from them, just as being a good parent doesn't mean being a perfect parent.

What This Means in Practice, Today

Translated into concrete terms, Winnicott's theory offers a few useful reference points for anyone who constantly feels "not enough":

There's no need to respond perfectly to every need of the child: what matters is being available most of the time, not absolute consistency.

Mistakes and ruptures in the relationship (a moment of impatience, a wrong response) aren't harmful in themselves: they only become so if they're never repaired.

Repairing a relational rupture — going back to the moment, acknowledging the mistake, restoring contact — teaches the child that relationships can go through difficult moments and still remain safe.

A parent's self-esteem shouldn't depend on the absence of mistakes, but on the ability to stay in relationship despite them: a principle very similar to what's described in the article on the power of self-esteem.

When It's Time to See a Psychotherapist

It makes sense to seek professional support when the feeling of parental inadequacy becomes chronic and paralyzing, when you recognize in yourself a way of functioning that's very oriented toward pleasing others (a possible sign of a false Self built in childhood), or when relational difficulties emerge with a child that seem to repeat patterns experienced in your own childhood.

How It's Addressed in Psychotherapy

In my work I use an integrated approach with a Gestalt, which helps ease parental perfectionism by bringing attention to what's actually happening in the relationship, here and now, rather than to an abstract ideal of parenting — together, when useful, with cognitive-behavioral tools to work on the automatic thoughts linked to the sense of inadequacy ("I'm not good enough," "I'm doing everything wrong").

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does "Good Enough Parent" Mean According to Winnicott?
It means a parent who responds adequately to the child's needs most of the time, without needing to be perfect: it's precisely the small, tolerable failures that help the child develop their own resources.

What Is Holding in Psychology?
It's the term Winnicott used to describe the combination of physical and emotional care that offers the child a stable, predictable environment — the secure base from which to explore the world.

What Are the True Self and the False Self?
They're two concepts from Winnicott: the true Self is the person's authentic core, while the false Self is a way of functioning built to adapt to and please the environment when it hasn't been sufficiently welcoming toward the child's real needs.

Can Being an Imperfect Parent Harm a Child?
According to Winnicott, no — in fact, it's excessively perfect and uninterrupted care that can hinder the development of the child's autonomy. What matters is sufficient availability over time, not the absence of mistakes.

I Also Work on This, in Florence

I am Dr. Martina Fino, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence registered with the Register of Psychologists of Tuscany. I often work with parents struggling with feelings of inadequacy, and with adults who recognize, in their own history, an excessive adaptation to other people's expectations. I see clients at my office in Florence, in the Campo di Marte-Coverciano area, and I also offer online sessions for those who live outside the city or in other parts of Tuscany.

To schedule an initial consultation, even just by phone and with no obligation: 392 693 1473 (WhatsApp available) — fino.martina@gmail.com

In summary

Donald Winnicott coined the phrase "good enough parent" to describe a parent who is adequate most of the time, not perfect.

Holding is the combination of physical and emotional care that gives the child a secure base from which to explore the world.

An environment that isn't good enough can encourage the development of a false Self built to please others.

Small, tolerable failures, followed by a repair of the relationship, help the child more than perfect, uninterrupted care.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace a personalized psychological evaluation or consultation.

Sources

Winnicott, D.
