Recited in therapy groups in the 1960s and '70s, printed on posters and t-shirts, quoted (often out of context) as a manifesto of individualism: few texts in psychology have had such a long life outside clinical settings, and few have been just as misunderstood.

What Is the Gestalt Prayer

The Gestalt Prayer is a short text written by Fritz Perls and published in 1969 in Gestalt Therapy Verbatim, the collection of transcripts of his seminars at the Esalen Institute in California. Perls presented it as a kind of statement of boundaries between two people in a relationship: each person exists to fulfill themselves, not to satisfy the other's expectations, and an authentic encounter between two people is a beautiful possibility, but never guaranteed or owed.

In one of his best-known lines, often quoted in isolation, Perls writes that when two people truly meet, it's beautiful, and when that doesn't happen, there's simply nothing to be done about it — a line that, taken out of the context it comes from, is at the center of much of the criticism the text has received in the decades since.

The Meaning: Separateness, Not Selfishness

In the context of Gestalt theory, the text should be read as an invitation to a healthy boundary between self and other, not as praise for indifference toward relationships. Perls worked with people who had often built their entire identity around other people's expectations — parents, partners, authority figures — losing touch with their own real needs. In this framework, remembering that each person remains themselves is not an invitation to indifference, but the precondition for an encounter between two people to be authentic rather than a forced mutual accommodation.

Why It Became So Famous — and So Controversial

The text became an informal manifesto of the humanistic culture and counterculture of 1960s-70s America, a historical period very focused on themes of individual self-realization. Its very popularity outside of context became its main problem: read without the clinical framework it came from, the final line was used to justify ending relationships, avoiding conflict, or a lack of commitment to the other person — exactly the opposite of what Gestalt theory means by authentic contact, that is, the ability to be fully present in the relationship in the here and now with the other person.

The Critique: Healthy Boundary or Excuse Not to Commit?

The strongest criticism leveled at the text, including by other Gestalt therapists, is that it risks being read as permission to disengage from relationships as soon as they become difficult, while therapeutic work often requires exactly the opposite: staying in contact with the other person even when the encounter isn't immediate or easy. There's a substantial difference between recognizing a healthy boundary — each person exists for themselves, not to please the other — and using that same principle to avoid the effort of a real bond. This boundary is the same one that, on the opposite side, is called into question for those who struggle to be alone with themselves: I discuss this in the article on dependency and counter-dependency in relationships, where the oscillation between fusion and detachment is often the real knot to untangle.

What This Has to Do With Gestalt Therapy Today

The underlying principle — that authentic change comes from fully being who you are, not from forcing yourself to be someone else — is the same one that animates one of the most central concepts in contemporary Gestalt, the paradoxical theory of change formulated by Arnold Beisser: real transformation happens only by fully accepting who you are in this moment, not by fighting it. Read alongside this principle, the Gestalt Prayer loses some of its reputation as an individualist manifesto and returns to what it originally was: a reminder of the value of showing up in a relationship as you truly are, rather than as a version adapted to be accepted.

When "Every Man for Himself" Becomes a Problem

It's worth seeking professional support when the principle of separateness is used systematically to avoid intimacy or conflict — leaving a relationship or a difficult confrontation not because there's nothing left to build, but because staying feels frightening. In these cases the difficulty isn't having boundaries, but being unable to tell a healthy boundary apart from an escape.

How Gestalt Psychotherapy Works

In my work I use an integrated approach with a Gestalt, which starts precisely from restoring authentic contact with one's own needs and with the other person in the here and now of the session — without confusing healthy autonomy with relational avoidance — together, when useful, with cognitive-behavioral to work on the automatic thoughts that push people to choose flight over confrontation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Wrote the Gestalt Prayer?
Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt psychotherapy together with Laura Perls and Paul Goodman, published it in 1969 in Gestalt Therapy Verbatim.

Does the Gestalt Prayer Promote Selfishness?
Not in its original intention: it began as a call for a healthy boundary between self and other, not as a justification for indifference toward relationships. However, it has often been read and used this way, taken out of its clinical context.

Why Is It Still Quoted in Gestalt Therapy?
Because its core — the invitation to exist fully as you are, rather than as a version adapted to others' expectations — remains central to the theory and practice of this approach.

Is It True That Nothing Can Be Done When Two People Don't Truly Meet?
It's the most controversial line in the text. In clinical practice it doesn't mean "giving up at the first obstacle," but recognizing that an authentic encounter can't be forced or demanded from the other person — while the therapeutic work still aims to stay in contact even through difficulties.

I Also Work on This, in Florence

I am Dr. Martina Fino, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence registered with the Board of Psychologists of Tuscany, specializing in Gestalt-oriented psychotherapy. In my work, I often help people distinguish a healthy boundary from a relational escape, restoring more authentic contact both with themselves and with those close to them. I see clients at my practice in Florence, in the Campo di Marte-Coverciano area, and I also offer online sessions for those living outside the city or in other parts of Tuscany.

To schedule an initial consultation, even just by phone and with no obligation: 392 693 1473 (WhatsApp available) — fino.martina@gmail.com

In summary

The Gestalt Prayer was written by Fritz Perls and published in 1969 in Gestalt Therapy Verbatim.

It describes a healthy boundary between self and other, not an invitation to indifference toward relationships.

It has often been misunderstood and used to justify relational avoidance, especially outside its original clinical context.

Its core — existing fully as you are, rather than as a version adapted to others' expectations — remains central to contemporary Gestalt.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace a personalized psychological evaluation or consultation.

Sources

Perls, F.
