But what does this word really mean, what distinguishes a hedonist from someone who simply knows how to enjoy life, and above all: when does the pursuit of pleasure stop being a resource and become a way to avoid something else?

What is hedonism

Thehedonism (from the Greek hēdonē, pleasure) is the philosophical doctrine according to which pleasure is the highest good and the main criterion for judging whether an action or a life is worthwhile. In psychology the term is used in a more specific, less philosophical sense:psychological hedonism is the thesis that human behavior is ultimately motivated by the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain — a principle that has profoundly influenced theories of motivation and learning.

In everyday language, however, "hedonism" often has a narrower and at times negative connotation: it refers to a lifestyle oriented toward immediate gratification — food, sex, consumption, entertainment — without much attention to future consequences.

Who is a hedonist

A hedonist is a person who organizes their choices around the pursuit of pleasure and the satisfaction of desires, often favoring immediate gratification over long-term goals. It's not a clinical label or a diagnosis: it describes a personality trait or lifestyle, which can be entirely balanced or, in some cases, become a way to avoid difficult emotions or responsibilities (more on this below).

Hedonism in philosophy: Aristippus, Epicurus, and a very common misconception

The most radical version of philosophical hedonism goes back to Aristippus of Cyrene (5th-4th century BC), according to whom the immediate pleasure of the senses is the purpose of existence. It's a very common misconception, however, to confuse this position with that of Epicurus, often associated with hedonism but actually much closer to a philosophy of moderation: for Epicurus the highest pleasure is not sensory excess, butataraxia, the absence of disturbance, achieved through simple and limited desires. In everyday language "epicurean" and "hedonist" are often used as synonyms, but in classical philosophy they point to two almost opposite paths toward well-being.

Hedonism in psychology: the role of pleasure in behavior

Beyond the philosophical debate, psychological research has shown that the brain's reward system — the circuit that regulates dopamine release in response to pleasurable stimuli — is one of the most powerful drivers of human behavior, and guides everyday choices far more often than we're willing to admit. A line of research on so-called "hedonic psychology" deals precisely with how people experience pleasure and displeasure, and how this influences decisions.

An interesting finding from this research is the so-called "hedonic treadmill": the human tendency to adapt quickly to both positive and negative events, returning after a short time to a relatively stable baseline level of satisfaction. It's one of the reasons why chasing immediate pleasure as the sole source of well-being tends to yield increasingly fleeting results: the level of gratification needed to feel fulfilled rises over time, in a mechanism not too different from what makes procrastination so hard to give up: in both cases the brain favors a small, immediate reward over a larger but delayed benefit.

The opposite of hedonism: when pleasure is denied

Not all excesses point in the same direction: some people organize their whole life around pleasure, while others avoid it almost systematically, filling every space with commitments and productivity. workaholism is, in a sense, the opposite pole of hedonism: here too the pleasure of the present moment is sacrificed, but not for a consciously chosen future goal — rather, out of an inability to sit still with oneself. Looking at both extremes helps clarify that the underlying issue isn't "how much pleasure one allows oneself," but how much one allows oneself to truly feel what one is experiencing in the present.

When pleasure becomes an escape

The pursuit of pleasure becomes a signal worth watching more closely when it stops being a free choice and becomes a necessity to avoid staying in contact with something else: boredom, emptiness, anxiety, unprocessed sadness. In these cases the person often justifies to themselves their choices with arguments like "you only live once," a rationalization mechanism that has much in common with what's described by cognitive dissonance: a belief is built that makes a behavior one isn't entirely convinced of, deep down, feel consistent.

Some signs that pleasure-seeking may be serving this avoidance function: a feeling of emptiness or restlessness as soon as a pleasurable stimulus is missing; difficulty being alone or in silence without distractions; a need to progressively intensify the stimulus (food, spending, substances, relationships) to achieve the same level of gratification as before; recurring guilt followed by repetition of the same behavior.

When It's Time to See a Psychotherapist

Seeking pleasure and gratification is part of a healthy life: that's not the problem. It makes sense to seek professional support when the pursuit of pleasure has stopped being a choice and has become an automatic pattern that repeats itself even when it generates concrete negative consequences (financial, relational, health-related), or when an apparently hedonistic behavior conceals a difficulty tolerating unpleasant emotions such as boredom, anxiety, or sadness.

How It's Addressed in Psychotherapy

In my work I use an integrated approach with a Gestalt, which helps bring attention to what one is truly avoiding when compulsively chasing immediate gratification — working on authentic contact with the real need of the moment, rather than its more convenient substitute — together with cognitive-behavioral useful for recognizing and changing the automatic thoughts that fuel the cycle ("just this once won't change anything," "I deserve it anyway").

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hedonism and epicureanism the same thing?
No, even though they're often confused. Hedonism in its most radical form (Aristippus) seeks immediate sensory pleasure; epicureanism instead seeks a moderate, lasting pleasure, made up of the absence of disturbance rather than sensory intensity.

Is being a hedonist a psychological problem?
No, not in itself. It becomes a signal to watch for only when the pursuit of pleasure is systematically used to avoid difficult emotions or generates recurring negative consequences.

Why does the pleasure I feel last less and less?
This is a phenomenon known in psychology as the "hedonic treadmill": we tend to quickly get used to pleasurable stimuli, so an increasingly greater reward is needed to achieve the same feeling of satisfaction.

What's the difference between hedonism and addiction?
Hedonism is a lifestyle oriented toward pleasure, not necessarily problematic. It becomes closer to an addiction when the behavior is no longer under the person's control despite the negative consequences — an assessment that should be made case by case with a professional.

I Also Work on This, in Florence

I am Dr. Martina Fino, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence registered with the Board of Psychologists of Tuscany. In session, I often find that behind a behavior labeled as a "vice" or "lack of willpower" there is actually an attempt — often unconscious — to avoid feeling something more uncomfortable. I see clients at my practice in Florence, in the Campo di Marte-Coverciano area, and I also offer online sessions for those who live outside the city or in other parts of Tuscany.

To schedule an initial consultation, even just by phone and with no obligation: 392 693 1473 (WhatsApp available) — fino.martina@gmail.com

In summary

Hedonism is the doctrine according to which pleasure is the supreme good; in psychology it refers to the principle by which behavior is motivated by the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain.

Hedonism (Aristippus) and epicureanism are often confused, but in classical philosophy they represent two different paths toward well-being.

The "hedonic treadmill" explains why chasing only immediate pleasure produces increasingly fleeting results over time.

The pursuit of pleasure becomes a signal to watch for when it stops being a free choice and becomes a way to avoid difficult emotions.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace a personalized psychological evaluation or consultation.

Sources

American Psychological Association (APA) — entry on "Hedonism".

Brickman, P. & Campbell, D.
