He was struck by an observation that didn't add up: why do some people actively repeat experiences that make them suffer, if in theory we seek pleasure and avoid pain?

Since then the concept has been taken up well beyond psychoanalysis. Attachment theory and cognitive approaches describe it with other terms — schemas, internal working models, scripts — but the basic clinical observation is the same.

How it manifests

Repeatedly choosing partners with the same way of functioning, despite having different life stories

Finding yourself in the same dynamic in every workplace, even after changing companies

Reproducing in your own family exactly what you had promised yourself not to repeat

Sabotaging things when they start going well

Feeling attracted to unstable situations and bored by peaceful ones

Recognizing the pattern — even with clarity — and repeating it anyway

This last point is the most disorienting: understanding isn't enough to stop it. I'll come back to this later, because it's the practical crux of the matter.

Why it happens

There's no single explanation, and none of these is a conscious choice.

The familiar weighs more than the pleasant. What we know is predictable, and predictability is a form of security — even when what is predicted is unpleasant. A known situation is less frightening than an unknown one, regardless of how good it is.

The attempt to rewrite the ending. A very common interpretation: we return to the same scene hoping that this time it will go differently. If I manage to make myself loved by someone who doesn't love, the original wound closes. The problem is that the person is chosen precisely because of their resemblance to the original, and so the ending repeats itself.

The lenses through which we look. Someone who has learned that affection is conditional tends to notice, among many people, those who confirm this. It's not that only those exist: they're simply the ones who stand out.

What hasn't been processed comes back onto the scene. Experiences that haven't found words don't stay still: they resurface in the form of behavior. This is one of the reasons why, in trauma work, I useEMDR — as long as a memory remains stored with all its charge, it continues to shape the present.

The role we know how to play. In a familiar dynamic, we know how to move. In a healthy one, often, we don't — and the discomfort of not knowing what to do can be more unpleasant than the familiar pain.

Why understanding isn't enough

This is the part I'd like to get across, because it prevents a lot of self-blame.

The pattern doesn't live in reasoning. It lives in an automatic, bodily reaction that starts before thought arrives: the attraction to that person, the discomfort with that situation, the choice made “on instinct” and justified afterward.

Knowing that something hurts doesn't change the reflex, just as knowing that an elevator is safe doesn't remove claustrophobia. This is why the people most clear-sighted about their own patterns are not at all the most free from them.

Change comes from a different repeated experience, not from a finer understanding.

How it's interrupted

Describing the pattern in writing. Not the people, but the sequence: how it begins, what you feel at the start, at what point it changes, how it ends. When it's written down, the recurring structure becomes visible — and it's usually more rigid than it seemed.

Identifying the moment of choice. Every repetition has a precise point where the decision is made, often very early and often in a minimal detail: an ignored signal, something left unsaid. That's where you can intervene, not halfway through the story.

Tolerating the strangeness of the different. Making the new choice doesn't bring relief: it brings discomfort. Those who expect to feel better immediately interpret that discomfort as proof they made a mistake, and turn back. Knowing in advance that you'll feel uncomfortable is half the work.

Distinguishing attraction from alarm. Someone who has a anxious style often confuses activation with interest. A person who makes you feel calm does not produce that surge, and for this reason may seem uninteresting.

A path, when the pattern resists. This is the most common case. In therapy, the pattern is not just talked about: it re-emerges within the therapeutic relationship, and it is there that it can be seen while it happens instead of being reconstructed afterward. It is the difference between talking about something and going through it.

A necessary clarification

The concept is sometimes used incorrectly, and this needs to be stated clearly: those who suffer violence are not seeking it out. Talking about repetition compulsion to explain why a person ended up in a violent relationship, or why they struggle to leave it, shifts the responsibility from the perpetrator to the victim.

Remaining in a harmful situation depends on fear, financial dependence, isolation, concrete threats, and the psychological effects of the violence itself. Repetition compulsion describes relational tendencies; it does not justify anyone's behavior and does not attribute blame to those who suffer it.

Frequent use

Is it a diagnosis?

No. It is a descriptive concept, not a disorder, and it does not appear in diagnostic manuals.

Does it only concern romantic relationships?

No. It is also observed in work, friendships, and family relationships. In romantic relationships it is more noticeable because the episodes are close together and recognizable.

Why do I get bored with balanced people?

Because your system has learned to recognize importance through intensity. Calm does not produce activation, and is read as an absence of feeling. This is one of the points that is most often worked on.

How long does it take to break the cycle?

It depends on how old it is and how pervasive it is. Many people notice the first changes within a few months — usually first in the ability to notice it while it is happening, then in the ability to choose differently.

Does it mean it's my parents' fault?

No, and this is a common trap. Tracing back where a pattern comes from serves to understand it, not to assign blame. Most of what we pass on, we pass on without knowing it.

A journey in Florence or online

If you recognize a recurring pattern and cannot break it on your own, you can contact me for an initial introductory session. I receive in my office in Florence, at Via Tommaso Campanella 5, in the Campo di Marte – Coverciano area, and online.

You'll also find how to get out of emotional dependency and theavoidant attachment.

Written by

Dr. Martina Fino

Psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence, registered with the Register of Psychologists of Tuscany no. 5767.
