It took them forty minutes instead of the usual ten. And from that moment the whole day changes color: what did I say wrong, are they getting tired of me, is this about to end.

Theanxious attachment — also called anxious-preoccupied or insecure-ambivalent — describes a way of bonding in which the desire for closeness coexists with the constant fear of losing it.

What attachment styles are

From the studies of Bowlby and Ainsworth we know that in the first years of life we learn, from the responses of those who care for us, what to expect when we need someone. That map stays with us and continues to guide adult relationships.

There are four main styles: secure, anxious, avoidant and disorganized. They are not diagnoses or rigid categories: they are tendencies, which express themselves differently from relationship to relationship and which can change.

How to Recognize It

Constant attention to the other person’s signals: response times, tone, chosen words

Frequent need for reassurance, which however only calms things down briefly

Fear of abandonment even in the absence of real signs

Difficulty staying with uncertainty: better bad news than silence

Tendency to interpret distance as rejection

Mood strongly dependent on the state of the relationship

Protest behaviors when feeling neglected: insisting, accusing, or withdrawing to provoke a reaction

Fear of being “too much” and of pushing the other person away precisely by asking

Difficulty feeling good alone when the relationship is going through an uncertain phase

The last point is what sets it apart: it is not the desire for closeness that characterizes this style, but theinability to find peace until closeness is confirmed.

Where it comes from

Typically from an early environment that was unpredictable. Not absent — that more often produces an avoidant style — but inconsistent: sometimes available, sometimes not, without the child being able to understand what it depended on.

In that situation the effective strategy is not to stop asking: it is to ask more, and more loudly, to increase the chances of being seen. An alarm system tuned high, which worked back then and remains switched on now.

Here too, mistreatment isn’t necessary: affectionate but inconsistent parents are enough, or a period in which attention was absorbed elsewhere.

Why uncertainty burns so much

There is a mechanism that explains much of the suffering, and it is the same one we encountered in the limerence and in the love bombing: the intermittent reinforcement.

A response that sometimes comes and sometimes doesn’t creates a stronger bond than a response that is always present. This is why an uncertain relationship feels more engaging than a stable one — and why a reliable person can even seem less interesting.

The dance with the avoidant

It is the most frequent combination, and not by chance.

Someone with an anxious style, faced with distance, moves closer and asks. Someone with an avoidant style, faced with the request, moves away. Each one triggers exactly the other’s fear: the anxious one confirms they are being intrusive, the avoidant one confirms that depending on someone is dangerous.

Both feel misunderstood, and both are right from their own point of view. Getting out of it requires that at least one of the two stop reacting as they always have.

What helps

Recognizing the alarm as an alarm. When the thought “it’s about to end” starts, notice that it is the system activating, not necessarily reality. There’s no need to believe it or fight it: just recognize it.

Delaying the reaction. Before writing the fifth message or asking for yet another confirmation, wait. The activation subsides on its own, and the decisions made afterward are different.

Asking directly instead of indirectly. “I felt lonely today” works; punitive withdrawal to make the other person seek you out doesn’t, and usually achieves the opposite effect.

Reducing the search for reassurance. It’s counterintuitive: reassurance calms things down for an hour and strengthens the need. Tolerating its absence, gradually, is what reduces the mechanism.

Rebuilding a life outside the relationship. When the only source of security is a person, every silence becomes an existential threat. Expanding your sources reduces the stakes.

Recognizing that calm is not boredom. Those with this style often confuse serenity with a lack of feeling, because they've learned to recognize love by the intensity of alarm.

A path, if the pattern repeats. When it happens again with different partners, the work isn't about the current relationship but about the pattern that precedes it. When there are significant early experiences, I also use theEMDR.

If your partner has an anxious style

Predictability is worth more than declarations. Letting someone know you'll be late reassures more than any "I love you."

Don't disappear during a conflict. Silence, for someone with this style, is not a pause: it's confirmation of their worst fear. It's better to say "we'll talk about it tomorrow" than to stop responding.

But don't take on the responsibility of regulating everything yourself. No amount of reassurance is enough if the mechanism isn't worked on by the person who carries it.

Frequent use

Are anxious attachment and emotional dependency the same thing?

They're related but don't coincide. Anxious style is a very common way of bonding; the dipendenza affettiva is its most extreme form, in which the relationship becomes a condition for one's own stability.

Why am I always attracted to distant people?

Because uncertainty activates the system you recognize as falling in love. A consistent person doesn't produce that activation, and for this reason may seem less interesting — while it is exactly what would be needed.

Can attachment style be changed?

Yes. This is called earned security: an insecure style can evolve toward a more secure one through reparative relationships or a therapeutic path. It's not fast, but it is documented.

Is asking for reassurance wrong?

Asking isn't wrong. It becomes a problem when it's continuous and when the effect lasts very little: that's the signal that it's feeding the need instead of satisfying it.

How do I know what my style is?

By observing what you do when you feel insecure in a relationship: whether you draw closer and ask, or whether you withdraw and shut down. It's a tendency, not a label, and it can vary with different people.

A journey in Florence or online

If you recognize yourself in this pattern, you can contact me for an initial introductory session. I receive in my office in Florence, at Via Tommaso Campanella 5, in the Campo di Marte – Coverciano area, and online.

You'll also find how to get out of emotional dependency and theavoidant attachment.

Written by

Dr. Martina Fino

Psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence, registered with the Register of Psychologists of Tuscany no. 5767.
