The closer the relationship gets, the more the need for space is felt. Not because they don't care about that person: because closeness, at a certain point, turns into an alarm.

Theavoidant attachment is one of the styles through which we bond with others, and it describes exactly this: the need for autonomy as protection from dependency.

What attachment styles are

They originate from the studies of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth: in the early years of life we learn, from the responses of those who take care of us, what to expect from others when we are in need. That model remains like a map and continues to guide adult relationships.

Four styles are generally distinguished: secure, anxious, avoidant and disorganized. These are not rigid categories or diagnoses: they are tendencies, often more pronounced in some relationships than others, and they can change over the course of life.

How to recognize avoidant attachment

Strong need for independence and discomfort with the feeling of being “obligated”

Difficulty asking for help, even when it would be needed

Tendency to minimize one's own emotional states: “it's nothing”, “I'll deal with it myself”

Discomfort in moments of emotional intimacy, more than physical intimacy

Withdrawal right when the relationship becomes more serious

Idealization of past relationships and impatience toward current ones

Looking for flaws in the partner during moments of greater closeness

Difficulty saying “I miss you”, “I need you”

Need to withdraw after an argument, instead of clarifying things right away

The most characteristic signal is the fifth: the escape happens when things are going well, not when they're going badly. This is what confuses the other person the most.

Where it comes from

Generally from an early environment in which requests for comfort went unanswered, or were met with discomfort or embarrassment. Mistreatment isn't necessary: affectionate parents who are just uncomfortable with emotions are enough, or a context in which autonomy was rewarded and fragility discouraged.

The child then learns an effective strategy: stop asking. If the need isn't met, the most economical solution is to deactivate it. It's not coldness, it's a successful adaptation — one that, however, continues to operate even where it's no longer needed.

And this is why many people with this style don't perceive themselves as distant at all: they simply feel independent.

What happens in relationships

The most common script is the encounter between an avoidant style and an anxious, and it's no coincidence: they attract and confirm each other.

Someone with an anxious style, faced with distance, moves closer and asks for reassurance. Someone with an avoidant style, faced with the request, pulls away even more. The more one pursues, the more the other retreats — and each one sees their initial fear confirmed: that others are intrusive, or that they are unreliable.

It's a painful dance for both, and neither one is doing it out of malice.

The cost, for those who have it

It's rarely discussed, because those with an avoidant style often appear solid and self-sufficient.

But the cost exists: loneliness even in the midst of others, relationships that remain superficial, the recurring feeling of watching from outside. And often a late realization — when an important relationship has already ended — of having kept someone at a distance whom they actually wanted close.

There's also a documented physiological aspect: those who minimize their own emotions don't really shut them off. The body continues to activate, even when the person reports feeling calm. The strategy moves the experience outside of awareness, not outside the body.

Can it change?

Yes, and this is one of the points where research is most encouraging. Attachment styles aren't fixed: there's talk of earned security to refer to those who, starting from an insecure style, develop a more secure one through reparative relationships or a therapeutic path.

The work goes through a few key points.

Recognizing the moment of escape. Not avoiding it right away, but noticing when it arrives: it almost always follows a moment of closeness, not a conflict.

Slowing down instead of disappearing. Saying “I need a bit of space, I'll be back” is very different from withdrawing in silence, and radically changes what happens on the other side.

Relearning to name needs. This is the most difficult part, because it means doing exactly what one learned not to do. It starts with small things.

Tolerating closeness gradually. Staying in a moment of intimacy a few minutes longer than would be comfortable, and verifying that nothing feared actually happens.

Looking at the origin. This is the real therapeutic work: understanding where one learned that asking wasn't useful. When there are significant early experiences, I also useEMDR.

If your partner has an avoidant style

Don't chase during moments of withdrawal. It's counterintuitive and it works: chasing increases the perception of threat.

Ask for behaviors, not declarations. "Text me when you arrive" is more accessible than "tell me you love me".

Don't take distance as a measure of their feelings. These are two disconnected things.

But don't erase yourself. Adapting indefinitely to the other's pace is how an avoidant-anxious relationship becomes a dipendenza affettiva.

Frequent use

Are avoidant attachment and avoidant personality disorder the same thing?

No, and this confusion is common. Attachment style is a relational tendency widespread in the general population; avoidant personality disorder is a structured clinical condition, centered on fear of judgment and social avoidance.

Do people with an avoidant style feel emotions?

Yes, and often intensely. The strategy concerns expression and awareness, not the existence of the emotion.

Why do they pull away exactly when everything is going well?

Because it is closeness that is perceived as risky, not conflict. The tighter the bond becomes, the more the fear of depending on someone is activated.

Will they come back after pulling away?

Often yes, once the distance has restored the sense of safety. The point, however, isn't the single return: it's whether the cycle repeats identically or whether something changes.

Can you have an avoidant style with one person and an anxious one with another?

Yes. Styles are tendencies, not fixed labels, and they express themselves differently depending on the relationship and the stage of life.

A journey in Florence or online

If you recognize this pattern, whether in yourself or your partner, you can contact me for an initial introductory session.
