You reread their messages looking for hidden meanings. You build entire scenarios around a “hi” that arrived four hours late. The day is good or terrible depending on a detail no one else would have noticed.

There limerence is this: a state of obsessive, involuntary and all-consuming infatuation, in which thoughts of the other person occupy most of your mental life.

Where the term comes from

The word was coined in the 1970s by psychologist Dorothy Tennov, who interviewed hundreds of people in love and noticed that they described something different from both love and desire: a state they hadn't chosen, couldn't stop, and which often made them suffer more than it made them happy.

She lacked a name for it, so she invented one: limerence, limerence in English. It's not a clinical diagnosis and doesn't appear in manuals. It's a description, and that's precisely what makes it useful.

How it manifests

Intrusive thoughts: the other person occupies your mind for most of the day, without you deciding it

Idealization: flaws are seen and immediately minimized or transformed into qualities

Dependence on signals: your mood is governed by their replies, silences, and response times

Continuous analysis: every word is examined in search of confirmation

Fear of rejection disproportionate to how well you actually know each other

Recurring fantasies about future scenarios or a mutual recognition that has yet to come

Physical symptoms: racing heart at their name, difficulty eating, insomnia

It's not falling in love, and it's not love

The most useful distinction concerns the real object of the experience.

Infalling in love there's a movement toward the other: you want to get to know them, you're curious about who they really are, and over time idealization gives way to a person with clear, defined features.

In the limerence the movement is toward a response: you want to be loved back. The other person matters less than the signal they send. And that's why limerence can last for years toward someone with whom you've never had a relationship, or barely know.

Inlove, finally, there's mutual knowledge and a certain calm. Limerence is never calm: it's a state of permanent alertness.

Why uncertainty feeds it

This is the point that explains most cases.

Limerence feeds on ambiguity. A clearly available and present person extinguishes it; a person who alternates closeness and distance ignites it and keeps it alive for years. Hope that isn't fully disproven is the fuel.

It's the same mechanism as intermittent reinforcement that makes relationships built on love bombingso hard to leave: an unpredictable reward creates a more tenacious attachment than a constant one.

This is why limerence so often develops toward unavailable people, long-distance relationships, interrupted stories, or bonds that remain suspended without ever being defined.

Limerence and emotional dependency

They resemble each other but don't coincide.

There dipendenza affettiva generally concerns an existing relationship you can't get out of. Limerence can exist without any relationship at all, and often its object is someone who doesn't reciprocate or doesn't even know about it.

The common ground is the foundation: both rest on a need that this person seems able to fill but never does. And both narrow life — time, attention, energy — around a single presence.

When it becomes a problem

It lasts for months or years without evolving

It interferes with work, study, sleep, other relationships

It leads you to behaviors you don't recognize: checking profiles, seeking chances to meet, monitoring

You sacrifice real opportunities for a possibility that never materializes

The suffering steadily outweighs the good moments

It repeats with different people, always with the same script

This last point is the most significant. An isolated limerence can be a life episode; a pattern that repeats speaks of something else, and it's worth looking at.

How to get out of it

By reducing contact and signals. Every small exchange recharges the mechanism. Detachment doesn't have to be theatrical, but it must be real.

By observing idealization. Try to describe that person as they really are, with what you know, not with what you imagine. Often it emerges that very little is known about them.

By bringing attention elsewhere. Not to distract yourself, but because limerence grows in the space left empty: when life fills up, it has less ground.

By asking yourself what it's for. It's the most uncomfortable and the most useful question. A romantic obsession often protects from something else: from a real relationship with its risks, from a void, from a phase of life in which direction is lacking. Loving someone unreachable is painful but safe.

With a therapeutic path, if it repeats. When the script returns with different people, the work is not about that person but about the way you bond.

Frequent use

Is limerence an illness?

No, it's not a diagnostic category. It's a description of a mental state that can be transient and harmless or become disabling.

How long does it last?

Tennov observed very variable durations, from a few months to several years. The main variable is not time but uncertainty: as long as ambiguity remains, it tends to persist.

Can it become love?

It can evolve into a real bond if the relationship materializes and idealization gives way to knowledge. Often, however, when the other person becomes available, the intensity drops sharply — and this says a lot about what was feeding it.

Why does this always happen to me with unavailable people?

Because unavailability keeps uncertainty alive, which is the fuel of the mechanism. And because, in some cases, an impossible relationship is also a risk-free relationship.

How do I distinguish it from unrequited love?

Unrequited love causes suffering and then, gradually, fades. Limerence doesn't fade: it self-feeds, and occupies the mind even when reason has already understood.

A journey in Florence or online

If you recognize yourself in what you've read, and especially if it's something that repeats, you can contact me for an initial introductory session. I receive in my office in Florence, at Via Tommaso Campanella 5, in the Campo di Marte – Coverciano area, and online.

You'll also find how to get out of emotional dependency and the pitfalls to avoid in a relationship.

Written by

Dr. Martina Fino

Psychologist and psychotherapist in Florence, registered with the Register of Psychologists of Tuscany no. 5767.
