Messages from morning to night, constant compliments, gifts, the feeling of finally being seen by someone. After two weeks they're already talking about moving in together.

Then something changes, and you don't understand when it happened.

The love bombing — literally “love bombing” — is a relational pattern in which one person overwhelms the other with attention, declarations and dramatic gestures at a very early stage, creating an intense and extremely rapid bond. And the point isn't the intensity: it's what comes after.

It's Not Intense Infatuation

The confusion is understandable: even real infatuation is overwhelming, disproportionate, a bit blind. The difference lies in three things.

The pace is imposed, not shared. In falling in love, two people accelerate together. In love bombing, one sets the pace and the other struggles to keep up. If you try to slow down, the reaction isn't understanding but disappointment, insistence, or sudden withdrawal.

The attention isn't really about you. It's grand but generic: compliments about how you're “different from everyone else,” huge declarations from someone who doesn't even know you yet. There's no real curiosity about who you actually are.

It's meant to create a debt. After weeks of gifts and total availability, setting a limit becomes extremely difficult: you feel a sense of ingratitude. And that's exactly the effect being sought.

The Cycle, in Three Phases

Idealization. You're perfect, you're the soulmate, no one has ever understood you like this. The bond solidifies within a few weeks. Often, in this phase, there's pressure to make irreversible decisions quickly: moving in together, marriage, a child, a joint investment.

Devaluation. The attention decreases without explanation. Criticism begins, small at first. The same person who found you perfect now finds you excessive, messy, too much. You try to figure out what you did and attempt to win back the initial version of them.

Alternation. This is the phase that traps you. The warmth returns, then disappears again, with no predictable logic. And this unpredictability creates an attachment far stronger than a constant affection would: every return of warmth feels like confirmation that “if I behave well, the old version of them comes back.”

Why It Works So Well

It has nothing to do with naivety, and those who experience it are no more unaware than anyone else.

The mechanism exploits two very human things. The first is intermittent reinforcement: a reward that arrives unpredictably produces a stronger attachment than a constant reward. It's the same principle that makes slot machines hard to walk away from.

The second is the comparison with the beginning. Those who experienced those first weeks don't forget them: they keep chasing that version of the relationship, convinced it's the authentic one and that the rest is just a difficult moment to get through. In reality, the initial phase wasn't any more true than the others: it was the first move.

Those with a history of dipendenza affettiva, or those coming from periods of loneliness or low self-worth, are more exposed — because that kind of attention fills something that had been missing for a long time.

Early Warning Signs

Very committal declarations after very little time

Constant contact, with an implicit demand for immediate response

Gifts disproportionate to the stage of getting to know each other

Rush to make things official or make definitive decisions

Annoyance or coldness when you ask for space

Criticism of the people you care about, presented as concern for you

Describing exes as all problematic, and themselves as always the victim

None of these elements alone proves anything. It's their combination, and above all the reaction when you set a limit, that is truly informative. A person genuinely interested in you welcomes a slowdown. Someone building dependency does not.

What to Do

Slow down deliberately, and observe. It's the simplest test there is: set your own pace and see what happens. The response tells you almost everything.

Don't make irreversible decisions in the first few months. Moving in together, joint investments, decisions that are hard to undo. Haste is part of the mechanism.

Keep your relationships alive. Withdrawing from friends is the first step toward isolation, and it almost always happens gradually and seemingly by choice.

Trust your discomfort, not just the facts. If something doesn't add up even when everything seems wonderful, that feeling is data.

If you're already in the alternating phase, remember that the warmth that returns is not proof that everything will work out: it's the part of the cycle that keeps the cycle going.

When it's needed most

If systematic control, imposed isolation, gaslighting, threats or violence are added to devaluation, this is no longer a relational dynamic to understand but a matter of personal safety.

The national anti-violence hotline number is 1522, free and active 24 hours a day, even anonymously. In case of immediate danger, the 112.

Frequent use

Does someone who does love bombing do it consciously?

Not always. Some people act it out strategically, others repeat a pattern they don't recognize, driven by a fear of abandonment that leads them to bond with the other person quickly. The effect on the person receiving it remains similar.

How do I distinguish it from overwhelming love?

Observe what happens when you set a limit. In mutual falling in love, a slowdown is accepted; in love bombing it produces insistence, guilt-tripping or punitive withdrawal.

Can it also happen outside romantic relationships?

Yes. Similar dynamics are observed in friendships, work contexts and highly cohesive groups, where an initial overwhelming welcome is followed by a growing demand for compliance.

If it has already happened, does it mean I'm fragile?

No. It means someone offered exactly what you needed, at the moment you needed it. It's useful information about yourself, not a sentence.

Can the relationship be recovered?

Only if the other person recognizes their own behavior pattern and truly works to change it, something that is verified in actions and over time. Promises made during the reconciliation phase are not a reliable indicator.

A journey in Florence or online

If you are going through or have gone through a relationship of this kind, you can contact me for an initial introductory session.
